We are welcoming the author of Inner Yoga and creator of the Slow Yoga method Janne Kontala for a one-day immersion in Singapore on 11 January 2020.

Janne Kontala, E-RYT200, RYT500, YACEP, PhD in Religious Studies, has been training teachers (including our dear friend and teacher Jani Jaatinen aka Gokulacandra) since 2005. He lives in Sweden, and teaches mostly in Scandinavia. This will be Janne's second visit to teach here in Singapore.  He is also leading a retreat and teacher training at Kota Kinabalu in 2020 with Gokul Yoga Shala.

 Program description:

Slow Yoga, as developed by Janne, is a detailed and safe approach to a rewarding yoga practice, where the specific focus is on inducing a meditative state of mind. Slow Yoga can be used as a powerful tool for counteracting stress, reinvigorating the body and mind, and in developing one's practice in a grounding and meditative manner.

This one-day immersion will allow you to experience Janne's approach to a developing a strong foundation in asana, paranayama and meditation practice.

Session 1: Saturday 11 January 11.30pm - 2.30pm
Five Principles of Asana Practice

Today, literally thousands of asanas are being practiced by contemporary yogis. Different schools hold sometimes different views on the best or correct way of doing a posture. However, behind the innumerable detailed techniques, there are only five basic principles that can be applied to all asanas. Once the purpose of an asana and its underlying principles are known, the practitioner can discover the best way to practice on his or her own.

We will learn the five principles of asana practice, namely:

1. Achitecture and safe alignment
2. Grounding
3. Stabilizing the middle
4. Spinal extension
5. Shoulder girdle

We will explore how do adjust these principles on a personal basis, and provide the toolkit for deepening your own understanding on asanas. We will also apply the principles to prepare the mind for meditation.  This section is a combination of practice and theory, where doing is combined with understanding.

Session 2: Saturday 11 January 3.30pm - 6.30pm
Pranayama & Meditation

This section is all about calming down the mind. The mind usually seeks satisfaction by excitement and outward orientation. We will turn the process upside down, by pulling the mind in and giving it tools to find inner joy by calming down.

The tools that we use are controlled breathing, simple pranayama techniques, and mantra meditation. These will be combined with explaining the theory behind the meditational tools that we explore. Sacred sound is one of the most central, and most misunderstood aspects of classic yoga. We will explore the theory of sound, how to utilise it in personal practice, and how to effectively enter a state of meditative peace and bliss.
