We are welcoming the author of Inner Yoga and creator of the Slow Yoga method Janne Kontala for a one-day immersion on "Patanjali Kriya Yoga" in Singapore on 6 January 2019.

Janne Kontala, E-RYT200, RYT500, YACEP, PhD in Religious Studies, has been training teachers (including our dear friend and teacher Jani Jaatinen aka Gokulacandra) since 2005. He lives in Sweden, and teaches mostly in Scandinavia. This will be Janne's first visit to teach here in Singapore.  He is also leading a retreat and teacher training at Kota Kinabalu in 2019 with Gokul Yoga Shala.

Program description:

Slow yoga, as developed by Janne, is a detailed and safe approach to a rewarding yoga practice, where the specific focus is on inducing a meditative state of mind. Slow yoga can be used as a powerful tool for counteracting stress, reinvigorating the body and mind, and in developing one's practice in a grounding and meditative manner.

This one-day immersion will introduce students to the basics of slow yoga, as applied to Kriya Yoga (presented in Patajali's Yoga Sutra) covering the following:
  • Tapas, austerity: learning to tolerate the inevitable discomfort and friction, when one learns to replace enjoyment from sensual agitation with quieting of the senses. Janne will teach the application of this principle in the context of asana practice, following a slow yoga approach. Special attention is given to a particular breathing pattern that enables the re-programming of the mind to induce inner calm.
  • Svadhyaya, the practice with sacred sound. This has three components: simple mantra meditation; Vedic chanting; and study of sacred texts. We will explore these practices by introducing different techniques of utilising sound in meditation. This will be combined with appropriate meditative focus on the sound centres of the body, as well as alignment with breath.
  • Ishvara pranidhana, surrender to the Supreme. This is the third component of kriya yoga, that deals with all aspects of the practitioners being. According to Bhagavad Gita, the ignorance that yoga tries to remove is manifested in attachment to the results of one's actions. If one is able to surrender the results to the Supreme, before one acts, there is a possibility of experiencing a liberated state while living in the world. The theory of Ishvara pranidhana will be explained, combined with some easy yet profound practices the participants can bring home from the workshop.

Session 1: Sunday 6 January 12.30pm - 3.30pm
The Slow Yoga Method
Slow yoga is a slow paced practice, that is meant to prepare the mind to move from seeking external pleasure, agitation and activity, towards the inner pleasure of calming down. This is the first component of kriya yoga. The participants will learn to use the breath as a tool for transformation. For this, we will choose relatively simple asanas, where the challenge is evoked by regulating the breath. The students will challenge their pre-existing notions about what it means to breath in asana practice. We will also engage in practices that by their very nature have a directly calming effect on the mind. Finally, we will explore the role of surrender in asanas and breath-awareness, as a preparation to the meditative aspects of kriya yoga. This section consists of some theory, but mainly practice.

Session 2: Sunday 6 January 4.30pm - 7.30pm
Pranayama & Meditation in Kriya Yoga.
After preparing the sense and mind with the methods of slow yoga, this workshop teaches the participants how utilise the power of sacred sound in combination with controlled breathing, pranayama, and meditation. Sacred sound is one of the most central, and most misunderstood aspects of classic yoga. We will explore the theory of sound, how to utilise it in personal practice, and how to effectively enter a state of meditative peace and bliss. The principles taught on this workshop are directly applicable for everyone after the class. This section contains the theoretical basis of Patanjali's kriya yoga, and suggestions for developing a personal practice.

This workshop contains practice of purifying breath and kriyas for stabilizing, energizing, and calming down the mind. Moreover, a kriya for developing a devotional mindset is introduced. We will discuss the practice of pranayama, and explore some of its basic techniques, such as nadi sodhana, ujjayi, and udgita pranayama. We will also learn mudra applications for facing hardships, a skill that is required both in meditation and life. Finally, we will explore the role of surrender, and how to apply that in yoga.
